More Than Just Financial Support: The Tuckwell Scholarship is renowned for its generous and holistic benefits package, designed to allow scholars to fully immerse themselves in their studies and personal development without the burden of financial stress. The total value of the scholarship is estimated to be between $76,000 and $136,000 over three to five years of an undergraduate degree.
The key benefits for the 2025 cohort include:
- Generous Financial Support: Scholars will receive $26,750 per annum (2025 rate, indexed annually) to cover on-campus residential costs, books, and general living expenses.
- Guaranteed Accommodation: All Tuckwell Scholars are guaranteed a place in an ANU-approved student residence, fostering a strong on-campus community.
- Relocation and Travel Assistance: A one-off payment of $1,500 is provided to assist with the initial move to Canberra. Additionally, scholars receive allowances to support two annual return journeys between their home and the university.
- Leadership and Development: A cornerstone of the program is its focus on personal and professional growth. Scholars participate in seminars, workshops, and leadership courses designed to build essential skills.
- Mentoring and Support: Each scholar is paired with a mentor and receives guidance from senior scholars and dedicated program staff. This network provides academic, personal, and professional support throughout their degree.

Eligibility Criteria for the 2025 Application Round
The Tuckwell Scholarship is open to talented students from all backgrounds across Australia. To be eligible for the 2025 application round (for commencement at ANU in 2026), applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Australian Citizenship or Residency: Applicants must be an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, or the holder of an Australian humanitarian visa.
- Year 12 Completion: Applicants must be completing Year 12 full-time in 2025 at a school located in Australia.
- Age Requirement: Applicants must be 17, 18, or 19 years old on 17 February 2026.
- Academic Standing: Applicants must be predicted by their school to achieve an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 95 or higher.18 A concession is available for students eligible for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS), who may apply with a predicted ATAR of 90 or higher.
- Subject Prerequisites: Applicants must have undertaken at least one high school English course and at least one high school Mathematics course in at least one semester during Year 11 or Year 12.
Application and Selection Process
The selection process for the Tuckwell Scholarship is a multi-stage, competitive process designed to identify well-rounded individuals who align with the scholarship’s values. The timeline for the 2025 application cycle is as follows:
- Stage 1: Initial Application: Applications will open in early March 2025 and close on 14 September 2025. This stage requires applicants to first submit an ANU Direct Application, after which they will receive a link to the Tuckwell Scholarship application form. This initial application will cover personal details, academic achievements, and extracurricular activities.
- Stage 2: Shortlisting: Based on the Stage 1 applications, a longlist of candidates will be invited to proceed to Stage 2. This stage, opening on 14 May 2025 and closing on 23 September 2025, involves longer-form questions to provide the selection panel with deeper insight into the applicant’s character and experiences. A reference from the applicant’s school principal will also be required at this stage.
- Stage 3: Interview Weekend: From the Stage 2 applicants, approximately 50 candidates will be shortlisted and invited to the final interview stage, which will be held from 11-13 July 2025. This stage typically involves a series of interviews and activities at the ANU campus, allowing the selection panel to get to know the candidates personally.
The final the Tuckwell Scholars will be selected based on their performance across all three stages, with a focus on not only individual merit but also on creating a diverse and balanced cohort.
